Water for Peace:  SCWK Celebrates World Water Day 2024

The Silver City Watershed Keepers will be celebrating World Water Day with a guided bird walk on March 23 and a yoga class on March 24.

Silver City has been celebrating World Water Day, an international event, for the past 11 years. The theme for World Water Day 2024 is Water for Peace, which focuses on the critical role water plays in the stability and prosperity of the world. When water is scarce or polluted – or when people have unequal or no access – tensions can rise between communities and countries.

World Water Day is an annual international observance day held on March 22 that highlights the importance of freshwater. The day is used to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.  The theme of each year focuses on topics relevant to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene.

To promote and inspire peace by building and being in community and our watershed, SCWK is holding a mindful bird walk along San Vicente Creek. Explore the peacefulness and beauty of this riparian area and the beginning of spring birds. Join Silver City Watershed Keepers coordinator Beth Cable and her husband ornithologist Dr. Dave McDonald on Saturday, March 23, at 8:00 AM. Meet at the trailhead under the Highway 90 overpass on Mill Road.

Sunday afternoon, March 24, attend a free flow yoga class with Silver City Watershed Keepers coordinator Beth Cable at the Lotus Center (211 West Broadway Street) from 4-5 PM. The practice will flow through poses recognizing the fluidity of our bodies and the importance of water on our Earth. It will close with a meditation for peace. Donations will be accepted.
